Mars: Some Background Information and Resources

There is a vast literature about the planet Mars. Some of the more useful or recent books are listed in this section on the "Mars Reading List." There are also numerous maps of Mars, many of which can be obtained from the U.S. Geological Survey.

For facts and photos of Mars, we strongly recommend that you look at some of the books listed in the enclosed reading list. In particular, the book by Mike Carr (The Surface of Mars, 1981) is a relatively inexpensive and instructive book with many diagrams and black and white photos. If you really want to know what the scientists think of Mars, you might try the more technical book, Mars, edited by H.H. Kieffer and colleagues (Univ. AZ Press, 1992).

The Viking missions to Mars to search for life on the Red Planet were particularly successful and interesting. [The hardcopy of] this section also includes some line drawings that illustrate the Viking spacecraft and a chapter written in 1976 regarding the early results of the search for life by the two Viking landers. For more information about the Viking missions, see the books in the reading list.
