Springtime on Mars! The blue, almost circular feature near the center of each view of Mars, above, is the South Polar Ice Cap. The cap has been shrinking ever since Mars Global Surveyor arrived in September 1997.

The colors represent temperatures, as observed by the THERMAL EMISSION SPECTROMETER (TES). Blues are colder, greens warmer, reds and whites are the warmest temperatures. The coldes temperatures are near -200 degrees F! The warmest temperatures are only around +25 degrees F!
