Nonstandard file names in SOFTWARE directory A few files in the SOFTWARE/SRC directory do not conform to the ISO 9660 8.3 filename standard. Specifically, the file MAKEFILE does not have an extension, and the files IO_LABLIB3.C and IO_LABLIB3.H have more than 8 characters in the filename. 1.2. Clarification of RAD.CALIBRATED_RADIANCE channel entries The TES data product of calibrated spectral radiance, found in RAD.CALIBRATED_RADIANCE, contains 143 channels for all TES data products. For Aerobraking and Science Phase Orbits data, MGST_0001 through MGST_0061, RAD.CAL_RAD channels 1 to 143 contain the calibrated data for 148.1 to 1650.6 cm-1 (6.06-67.51 um). Due to a change in data collection strategy, Mapping data, starting at MGST_x100, is collected over 201.0 to 1703.5 cm-1 (5.87-49.74 um). Thus, to maintain continuity within the dataset, mapping data RAD.CAL_RAD channels 1 to 5 are filled with 0's and channels 6 to 143 contain the calibrated data for 201.0 to 1650.6 cm-1. The TES Team hopes to rectify this inconsistency in a future revision that will extend RAD.CAL_RAD out to 148 channels, covering 148.1 to 1703.5 cm-1 (5.87-67.51 um), for all TES data products. On Aerobraking and SPO volumes, RAD.CAL_RAD channels 144 to 148 will be filled with 0's; on Mapping volumes, RAD.CAL_RAD 144 to 148 will contain calibrated data out to 1703.5 cm-1 (49.74 um). 1.3. Incorrect values for BOL.CALIBRATED_VISUAL_BOLOMETER and BOL.LAMBERT_ALBEDO on MGST_1180 to MGST_1344 The TES Team has recently discovered that inaccurate geometry parameters have been used in the calculation of the BOL.CALIBRATED_VISUAL_BOLOMETER and BOL.LAMBERT_ALBEDO values published on volumes MGST_1180 to MGST_1344 (ock 6512-22115). Because of the nature of the problem, the error is negligible for most data and only manifests itself in observations of the polar regions or near the terminator. The TES Team hopes to re-release corrected data in a future revision. (See errata entry 2.5 below.) 1.4 Calibration uncertainty for spectral radiance data in MGST_1247 to MGST_1395 The space reference observations were modified in the summer of 2001 to accommodate the new -16 degree off-point orientation of the MGS spacecraft. As a result of this change, a previously undetected radiance error was introduced which affects the absolute calibration of the spectral radiance observations. The affected data were collected between ocks 12581-26783, and have been published in volumes MGST_1247 to MGST_1395. The radiance error is systematic and predominantly negative, having the largest impact on the low radiance level data: night surface, polar surface, and atmospheric emission observations. The resulting error is a decrease in the surface temperature by -3 K (for a 200 K scene) or a decrease in the atmospheric temperature by -8 K (for a 150 K scene). The error is less than -1 K for a 260 K radiance surface. A new calibration algorithm has been developed to remove the systematic radiance error. The algorithm produces calibrated radiances that are consistent with the observations acquired prior to the modified spacecraft geometry. The revised data will be released in the near future as RAD.VERSION_ID = "002e". (See errata entry 2.5 below.) 1.5 Limited RAD tables available starting MGST_1395 The TES spectrometer has produced nearly continuous spectral radiance observations from February 1999 through August 2004. However, due to the expected degradation of the neon lamps over this period, the TES team has decided to suspend further use of the spectrometer subsystem. The remaining neon lamp life will be conserved in order to support future critical observations. When the spectrometer is not operating, no valid spectral radiance observations will be available in the RAD tables. All available radiance data is listed by orbit in the ENB text files. 1.6. Quality uncertainty of POS and GEO parameters in MGST_1246 to MGST_1411 The TES Team has recently discovered that some data released in POS and GEO tables in volumes MGST_1246 to MGST_1411 may have been based on predicted MGS spacecraft location information, rather than the actual reconstructed spactcraft location. The difference between the two values is usually negligible. However, in the interest of providing the most accurate data possible, the TES Team will re-release corrected data in a future revision. (See errata entry 2.5 below.) 2.0 NEW FILE ADDITIONS 2.1 New data set version (2.0) starting with MGST_1229 Due to the improvements that the TES Team has made to the data set throughout mapping, early TES-TSDR volumes are incompatable with recent releases (see CATALOG/DATASET.CAT for more details). MGST_1229 is the first volume in a new data set which will eventually include all previously released mapping data in a cohesive data format. Users are directed to the PDS Geosciences Node webpage for release information of previous mapping data volumes. 2.2 New Vanilla software files available on MGST_1229 Vanilla version 3.4.10 is available on MGST products starting with MGST_1229. New precompiled binaries are available in SOFTWARE/BIN/; new source code is available in SOFTWARE/SRC/, including GEN_IRTM.C, MAKEFILE.WIN, LOGGING.C, ROUGH_COUNT.C, ROUGH_COUNT.H, VIDX.C, VIDX.H, VIDXBITS.C, VIDXBITS.H, and VIDXUSE.C. Details of the changes over previous versions are listed in SOFTWARE/SRC/VERSION.H; usage instructions for the new features are available in SOFTWARE/DOC/USERDOC.TXT. 2.3 Second release of several volumes in data set version 2.0 Routine atmospheric incorrectly processed several orbits of data that have already been released on MGST_1### volumes (see details below). The ATM data is now available and included in the second release of the MGST_1### volumes, and identified in the VOLDESC.CAT as VOLUME_VERSION_ID="version 2". ock_range vol_id atm_table 10979 MGST_1229 atm22905.tab 11279-11290 MGST_1233 atm23303.tab 12059-12070 MGST_1240 atm24005.tab 12095-12106 MGST_1241 atm24101.tab 12227-12239 MGST_1242 atm24205.tab 12299-12323 MGST_1243 atm24304.tab-atm24306.tab 12359-12407 MGST_1244 atm24402.tab-atm24406.tab 12443-12455 MGST_1245 atm24503.tab-atm24504.tab 12529-12538 MGST_1246 atm24604.tab 12623-12635 MGST_1247 atm24704.tab-atm24705.tab 12959-12983 MGST_1250 atm25005.tab-atm25006.tab 13364-13366 MGST_1255 atm25504.tab 14015-14026 MGST_1263 atm26303.tab-atm26304.tab 14099-14123 MGST_1264 atm26403.tab-atm26405.tab 14147-14183 MGST_1265 atm26502.tab-atm26503.tab 14255-14267 MGST_1266 atm26603.tab-atm26604.tab 2.4 Data set version 2.0 release of MGST_1100 through MGST_1228 Volumes MGST_1100 through MGST_1228 include data previously released in the version 1.0 dataset. Volumes will be released as available in reverse order of data collection (see table for latest release). Documentation on the concurrent "new data" archive volume will be used in these archive volumes. Similarly, the errata addressed in the concurrent "new data" archive, and described in the remainder of this text, will have been addressed in the corresponding volumes. release_date version_2_volume_range concurrent_new_volume February 2004 MGST_1220 to MGST_1228 MGST_1317 March 2004 MGST_1210 to MGST_1219 MGST_1317 April 2004 MGST_1200 to MGST_1209 MGST_1330 May 2004 MGST_1190 to MGST_1199 MGST_1330 June 2004 MGST_1180 to MGST_1189 MGST_1330 September 2004 MGST_1170 to MGST_1179 MGST_1330 January 2005 MGST_1150 to MGST_1169 MGST_1376 April 2005 MGST_1130 to MGST_1149 MGST_1388 July 2005 MGST_1120 to MGST_1129 MGST_1396 October 2005 MGST_1100 to MGST_1119 MGST_1400 2.5 Third release of several tables of MGST volumes in MGST data set The TES team has corrected several recently identified processing errors. A geometry problem affected the BOL tables (item 1.3 above); a problem with the reference observations affected the RAD tables (item 1.4 above); a processing uncertainty affected the POS and GEO tables (item 1.6 above). The ATM data was recalibrated (ATM.ATMOSPHERIC_CALIBRATION_ID = 3.06) with the revised RAD (V.002E) data and using improved spectral shapes (see DOCUMENT/PROCESS and DATA/STDSHAPE). The OBS.CLASSIFICATION:PHASE field has been redefined to include the MGS Extended Mission. The majority of the volumes in this dataset ("MGS-M-TES-3-TSDR-V2.0") have previously only been released once, however for simplicity all volumes in this rerelease will be identified as VOLUME_VERSION_ID = "VERSION 3"; see item 2.3 above for Version 2 list. The following volumes have revised data in the listed tables: volume_range version_3_tables MGST_1100 to MGST_1179 ATM MGST_1180 to MGST_1219 ATM BOL MGST_1220 to MGST_1239 ATM BOL OBS MGST_1240 to MGST_1245 ATM BOL OBS RAD MGST_1246 to MGST_1303 ATM BOL OBS POS RAD MGST_1304 to MGST_1344 ATM BOL GEO OBS POS RAD MGST_1345 to MGST_1401 ATM GEO OBS POS RAD MGST_1402 to MGST_1410 GEO POS The following documents have also been added, revised, and/or redistributed with this rerelease: VOLDESC.CAT CATALOG/DATASET.CAT (item 3.18 below) DATA/ENB.TXT (item 3.16 below) DATA/DATAINFO.TXT DATA/S74CORDS.{LBL,TAB} (new) DATA/S74CORSS.{LBL,TAB} (new) DATA/STDSHAPE.{LBL,TAB} DATA/MARS/ATM.FMT DATA/MARS/OBS.FMT DOCUMENT/PROCESS.{ASC,LBL,PDF} INDEX/CLASS.TXT (item 3.15 below) INDEX/CUMINDEX.{LBL,TAB} INDEX/QUALITY.TXT 3.0 MODIFICATIONS TO EXISTING FILES 3.1 Address change for ASU included in various texts starting on MGST_1229 The address to contact TES personnel at ASU has changed to the following: Arizona State University Department of Geological Sciences Mars Space Flight Facility Box 876305 Tempe, AZ 85287-6305 Starting with MGST_1229, these texts have been modified to include the new ASU address: VOLDESC.CAT, CATALOG/PERSON.CAT, DOCUMENT/ARCHSIS.ASC and ARCHSIS.PDF 3.2 Addition of a quality bit field and modification of related texts starting with MGST_1229 Starting with volume MGST_1229 the BOL.QUALITY field has been expanded to include the bit field "BOLOMETER_LAMP_ANOMALY" which tracks significant gaps in sampling the visible bolometer reference lamps. More information on this anomaly is available in INDEX/QUALITY.TXT Section 3.7. Additional text files modified to describe the new field include DATA/MARS/BOL.FMT and SOFTWARE/DOC/USERDOC.TXT. The new BOL.FMT file is compatable with all data released since MGST_0162. 3.3 INDEX/CLASS.TXT Appendicies updated starting with MGST_1229 Starting with MGST_1229, INDEX/CLASS.TXT Appendix A.1 tables, "Targeted Mosaic Codes" and "EPF Latitude" have been updated to include targeting information for mapping orbits through ock 13990. 3.4 Description of the OBSERVATION_TYPE field in modified starting with MGST_1240 Starting with volume MGST_1240, the description of the OBSERVATION_TYPE field has been modified in DATA/MARS/OBS.FMT and DOCUMENT/SDPSIS Appendix 7. The description now reads "N=Reference observation NOT used in calibration". The N value is used in this manner for all released TES data, although the documentation was mistakenly never updated to reflect this. 3.5 CATALOG/MISSION.CAT updated starting on MGST_1253 Starting with MGST_1253, the CATALOG/MISSION.CAT has been updated with a description of the "Extended-Extended (E2) Mission". Details regarding the dates, mission objectives, and mapping operations are included. 3.6 Minor Update to contents of INDEX/QUALITY.TXT starting with MGST_1253 The HGA motion calculation described in the INDEX/QUALITY.TXT includes the definintion of periods of MGS Beta-Suppliment. Starting with MGST_1253, the periods of Beta-Suppliment were updated as follows: Nominal period = 1985-5784 B-Supp period = 5788-11900 Nominal period = 11901-15152 B-Supp period = 15153 to present 3.7 INDEX/CLASS.TXT Appendicies updated starting with MGST_1253 Starting with MGST_1253, INDEX/CLASS.TXT Appendix A.1 table, "Targeted Mosaic Codes", has been updated to include targeting information for mapping orbits through ock 16000. 3.8 Revised Vanilla software and associated files available on MGST_1253 Vanilla version 3.4.12 is available on MGST products starting with MGST_1253. Precompiled binaries are available in SOFTWARE/BIN/; revised source code is available in SOFTWARE/SRC/. This revision corrects a bug in the emissivity calculation; details of the change over previous versions are listed in SOFTWARE/SRC/VERSION.H. 3.9 Revised Vanilla software and associated files available on MGST_1267 Vanilla version 3.4.21 is available on MGST products starting with MGST_1267. Precompiled binaries are available in SOFTWARE/BIN/; revised source code is available in SOFTWARE/SRC/. Details of the changes in this version as compared to previous versions are listed in SOFTWARE/SRC/VERSION.H. 3.10 Clarification of contents of DATA/ENB.TXT starting with MGST_1267 The DATA/ENB.TXT included on MGST_1250 through MGST_1266 incorrectly contains the phrase "EQTRX FROM GROUND" associated with the following upload notes: p13512.img p13864.img p14204.img p13599.img p13949.img p14297.img p13699.img p14039.img p13770.img p14108.img Starting with MGST_1267, an attempt has been made to clarify the use of the terms "orb" and "orbit" within the DATA/ENB.TXT. The term "ock" is used to identify specific orbits using the TES "ORBIT_COUNTER_KEEPER" (ock) numbering system. The term "orbit" is used in the generic sense or to describe the Nth orbit within a pattern of the routine TES observation cycle. These errors have been corrected in the cumulative ENB_IMG.TXT notes available on the MGST Virtual Volume (http://tes.asu.edu/data_archive). 3.11 Alias names added to DATA/MARS/GEO.FMT available on MGST_1277 Starting with MGST_1277, several ALIAS_NAME keywords have been added to the DATA/MARS/GEO.FMT file. The names have been added for consistency with the other column OBJECTs in the file. The following ALIAS_NAME keywords were added: ALIAS_NAME = longigude ALIAS_NAME = latitude ALIAS_NAME = heliocentric_lon ALIAS_NAME = target_distance ALIAS_NAME = local_time ALIAS_NAME = solar_distance NOTE: The DATA/MARS/GEO.FMT file with new alias names did not get propagated to volumes MGST_1277 through MGST_1286; the first volume with the new DATA/MARS/GEO.FMT file is MGST_1287. 3.12 Calibration quality field defined in DATA/MARS/RAD.FMT, available on MGST_1287; Second release of several volumes in data set version 2.0 A new calibration quality field has been defined out of spare bits in the RAD tables. The new field is RAD.QUALITY.CALIBRATION_FAILURE and is used to identify whether radiance calibration has failed and the CAL_RAD fields have been set to N/A. Valid values are 0 or 1, such that 0 = radiance calibration successful 1 = radiance calibration failed. For more information, see DATA/MARS/RAD.FMT or INDEX/QUALITY.TXT. The DATA/MARS/RAD.FMT available starting on MGST_1287 should be used with all Version 2.0 TES data (DATA_SET_ID = "MGS-M-TES-3-TSDR-V2.0"). Since the spare bits used for this field were previously set to zero, all previously released data will show that the radiance calibration was successful. Radiance calibration was not successful in the following orbits, and the RAD tables have been corrected in the second release of these volumes. ock_range vol_id rad_table 11076-11122 MGST_1231 rad23101.tab-rad23103.tab 12059-12093 MGST_1240 rad24005.tab-rad24006.tab 12094-12106 MGST_1241 rad24101.tab 3.13 INDEX/CLASS.TXT Appendicies updated starting with MGST_1287 Starting with MGST_1287 INDEX/CLASS.TXT Appendix A.1 tables, "Targeted Mosaic Codes" has been updated to include targeting information for mapping orbits through ock 17600. 3.14 Description of coordinate system expanded starting with MGST_1306 Starting with MGST_1306 the description of the coordinate system used for all TES geometric parameters was expanded in the following documents: CATALOG/DATASET.CAT, DATA/GEOMETRY.TXT, and DOCUMENT/SDPSIS (section 2.3.2). 3.15 INDEX/CLASS.TXT Updated with small angle roll codes MGST_1317 Starting with MGST_1317, the INDEX/CLASS.TXT describes five new OBS.OBSERVATION_CLASSIFICATION:TES_SEQUENCE values for use in identifying TES data collected while the MGS spacecraft executes small angle roll maneuvers. The size of the roll angle is stored as a signed integer, rounded to the nearest degree, in the OBS.OBSERVATION_CLASSIFICATION:CLASSIFICATION_VALUE field. Since this update only includes the addition of classification values and no new classification fields, the DATA/MARS/OBS tables and format files from these volumes are fully compatable with all previous version 2.0 volumes (MGST_1###). At the time of this entry, MGS has only been in the small angle roll (plus pitch) orientation during TES ocks 20978-21747; the user is referred to the appropriate TES Experimenter's Notebook upload entry (DATA/ENB.TXT or DATA/ENB_IMG.TXT) for detailed information on each maneuver. Also, the Appendicies of the INDEX/CLASS.TXT have been verified to be correct for mapping orbits through ock 21010. 3.16 DATA/ENB.TXT Updated with missing table information starting MGST_1345 The DATA/ENB.TXT has previously only included "No DATA" comments for those orbits which for which all data was missing. Starting with MGST_1345, the DATA/ENB.TXT was ammended to include a list of tables missing from individual orbits. For example, several tables have no records for TES ock 22257, as indicated by the entry: TES orb #22257: 2003-288 // 14:37:48 - No ATM GEO POS TLM Updates to previously released ENB.TXT will be made available on future re-releases of those volumes. Alternatively, the MGST Virtual Volume enb_orbit.txt has already been updated for ocks 6512-23213; this document is available at http://tes.asu.edu/data_archive/mgst/data/enb_orbit.txt. 3.17 INDEX/SPECMASK Updated starting MGST_1170 A description of spectral_mask 21, applied to data on MGST_1178, was added to INDEX/SPECMASK.TAB and INDEX/SPECMASK.TXT. 3.18 CATALOG/DATASET.CAT Updated to new PDS standards MGST_1396 Version 2005-05-05 of the CATALOG/DATASET.CAT includes CITATION and ABSTRACT descriptions, as per new PDS standards. The new version is available on TES archive volumes MGST_1396 and later. 3.19 New Vanilla software and associated files available on MGST_1396 Vanilla version 3.4.25 is available on MGST products starting with MGST_1253. Precompiled binaries are available in SOFTWARE/BIN/; please note, that we can no longer provide the HP (hppa2.exe) precompiled binary. Revised source code is available in SOFTWARE/SRC/, and details of the revision is listed in SOFTWARE/SRC/VERSION.H. This revision corrects for data returned from a false match in particular scenarios.
