Amnesty International at ASU has chosen Rebiya Kadeer as our special focus
case. She has spent more than 3 years jailed in a region where
prison conditions are notoriously harsh. What did she do to be put
in jail? She founded and directed a large trading company in
Northwestern China, championed the rights of the Uighur ethnic group
there, and became one of china's most prominent advocates of women's
rights. The Chinese government charged her with "providing
secret information to foreigners." She was carrying local newspapers
that were publicly available.
We consider Rebiya
Kadeer to be a prisoner of conscience. Amnesty International has
appealed for her immediate and unconditional release. In light of
Ms. Kadeer's failing health, AI has added to its appeal a call for her
release on medical grounds.
